I join the overwhelming majority of Americans to demand an amendment to the United States Constitution to end the domination of big money in politics and give voice to all Americans.

I will stand with all Americans, without regard to party or other differences, and urge all candidates and elected officials to do the same, in order to pass and ratify such a constitutional amendment as soon as possible.

The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. is one that inspires many to heed the call to action in selfless duty to our nation. Despite the constant threat of violence, Dr. King dedicated his life to ensuring all Americans had equal access to the dream promised by the founding fathers. Now, it is the duty of everyone living in the legacy of his struggle to preserve and carry out the vision that Martin Luther King Jr.––and the civil rights movement he was a part of––had for this country.

When looking back at the conditions of the past, it is easy to take for granted how far we’ve come. The progress we’ve made is not merely a result of time passing. The civil liberties gained over the past few decades are a result of years of organizing, setbacks, and enduring backlash from those in power.

Now the equal citizenship that MLK and the civil rights movement won by protecting and expanding voting rights for all Americans is being threatened by big money. The influence of big money in politics affects all voters by corrupting a system that is meant to serve the people. By undermining our fundamental right to an equal voice in our country, big money has become the biggest threat facing our nation’s democracy.

As we once again examine the fundamental values of our nation—voting rights, power and privilege, and whose voices get heard—it is up to us to decide how we want to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
