I join the overwhelming majority of Americans to demand an amendment to the United States Constitution to end the domination of big money in politics and give voice to all Americans.

I will stand with all Americans, without regard to party or other differences, and urge all candidates and elected officials to do the same, in order to pass and ratify such a constitutional amendment as soon as possible.

Michigan Fights Corruption, Citizens Rise Up

Michigan Fights Corruption, Citizens Rise Up

Polar forces, corruption versus transparency, are clashing in Michigan. Last month, Gov. Rick Snyder enacted legislation allowing candidates running for state office to raise unlimited money from outside political groups. This is Citizens United on steroids, and without opposition, will further the demise of our democracy where money, not votes, matter. But there is opposition – and lots of it.

Thanks to sustained pressure from engaged citizens, state resolutions calling on Congress to amend the Constitution to overturn the Citizens United decision exist in both the house (HR 125) and the Senate (SR 77). In 2015, Michigan was given the worst score by the Center for Public Integrity for transparency within its state government. These resolutions are needed now more than ever.

Get involved locally and fight for a government of, by and for the people!

“In Michigan, there’s been an absolute explosion of independent spending in the last election cycle,” says Craig Mauger, Executive Director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network and non-partisan observer of campaign finance trends. The task at hand now is for Michigan citizens to tirelessly engage with their elected officials so Michigan can add its name to the growing list of states calling on Congress to pass a 28th Amendment and ensure Constitutional rights are afforded to people, and people only.

Citizens across the political spectrum know there’s too much money in politics. On November 14th, 15th and 16th, we’ll come together to rally support for a 28th Amendment to overturn Citizens United and reclaim our democracy.

Here are the details:

  • Ann Arbor, MI — November 14th, 7-9pm
  • Bloomfield, MI — November 15th, 7-9pm
  • Kalamazoo, MI — November 16th, 7-9pm

Ben Gubits, Associate Director of American Promise, will be joined by Craig Mauger from The Michigan Campaign Finance Network and Judy Karandjeff from the Michigan League of Women Voters. Also co-sponsoring this event is Take Back Our Republic, a conservative group geared towards getting money out of politics and restoring individual liberties to the political system.

Our democracy is only as strong as we, the people, are willing to make it. Let’s work together so that people, not money, govern!
