The 28th Amendment: A Constitutional Amendment to Restore Democracy

I join the overwhelming majority of Americans to demand an amendment to the United States Constitution to end the domination of big money in politics and give voice to all Americans.

I will stand with all Americans, without regard to party or other differences, and urge all candidates and elected officials to do the same, in order to pass and ratify such a constitutional amendment as soon as possible.

What is the 28th Amendment?

The next amendment to the U.S. constitution will be the 28th Amendment. Will it be the For Our Freedom Amendment, Gavin Newsom’s proposed amendment to end America’s gun violence crisis or final ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment?  Nobody can say for sure.

What we do know is that the first 27 past amendments have had a profound effect on the rights we enjoy today – including the Bill of Rights, as well as amendments that freed the slaves, secured the right to vote for women and lowered the voting age to 18, and eliminated the discriminatory poll tax during the Civil Rights Era.

American Promise and the citizen leaders who power the organization are aiming for the next amendment to be the For Our Freedom Amendment, which will enable Congress and the American people to enact reasonable limits on campaign contributions and dark money political spending. This proposed 28th Amendment to the constitution is supported by a vast majority of Americans on both sides of the political aisle.

How Does Money in Politics Impact YOU?

As election spending continues to hit new records with each campaign — more than 16.7 billion in 2022 — the political system shifts to favor the wishes of wealthy donors rather than we the people. In the face of these threats to our representative government, the proposed 28th Amendment to reduce the corrupting influence of big money in politics is rapidly gaining momentum in states across the country, thanks to cross-partisan support, grassroots volunteer action, and collaborative partnerships.

What We Can Do About It?

The For Our Freedom Amendment is a key to fixing the system that makes high-dollar donors more powerful than every other American. This proposed 28th Amendment to the constitution offers lasting, structural reform to ensure an equal voice for every American and end the escalating influence of big money that dominates our elections. American Promise is working to organize American citizens to win the 28th Amendment to restore a democracy in which we the people — not big money, not corporations, not unions, not special interests — govern ourselves.
