February 20, 2026 — As new super PAC activity associated with the technology and AI sector enters the midterm landscape, American Promise released the following statement from co-founder CEO Jeff Clements:
“The midterm cycle is already revealing a troubling expansion of outside money’s influence in our elections. Reports that Meta is pouring roughly $65 million into state legislative races through newly formed super PACs, along with similar efforts by other AI companies, show how quickly outside money can organize at scale and steer decisions in communities where local voters should be the loudest voice.
“This isn’t a left-or-right issue. Supreme Court decisions have increasingly displaced state authority to set rules for money in elections, forcing a one-size-fits-all approach. At a moment when AI is raising urgent questions for our economy, privacy, security, and civic life, decisions should be shaped through open debate and accountable lawmaking—not by political spending that gives a select few outsized influence.
“Our elections work best when constituents’ voices matter more than outside spending. When states can’t set rules that fit their own needs, the incentives shift away from local priorities and toward the interests of well-funded global players. That’s how outside interests end up with more leverage than the people who live with the consequences.”
About American Promise
After a series of Supreme Court decisions including Citizens United, which opened the floodgates to unlimited political spending, Americans have watched money speak louder than their votes. American Promise is a cross-partisan organization working to pass the For Our Freedom Amendment, to restore the power of Congress and the states to set reasonable limits on campaign spending. With 23 states already signaling support, American Promise is building a national movement to put voters back at the center of our elections.
