Nov. 4, 2026 — American Promise cofounder and CEO Jeff Clements issued the following statement on the 2026 midterm election results and Americans’ demand for accountability and action:
“This election was a powerful reminder of a fundamental American principle: Political power rests with the people. Across the country and across party lines, Americans exercised that power, with concern about corruption emerging as one of the defining issues of the election.
“Both before Election Day and at the polls, Americans made clear that corruption is a major concern. In the Associated Press exit poll, more than half said government corruption was crucial to their vote, a higher share than those who said the same about the cost of living. And many expressed little confidence in either political party’s ability to address it — a reminder that the concern runs deeper than any one election or party’s success at the polls.
“The message is unmistakable. Americans across the political spectrum are fed up with corruption and the outsized influence of unlimited money in politics. We are tired of a system in which the donor class has more power than the people our government is supposed to represent.
“The American people have made our concerns clear. We want accountability. We want a political system that answers to the people, not the donor class. And we want our elected representatives to have the authority to act. The election is over, but the work of restoring that power to the people continues.”
About American Promise:
After a series of Supreme Court decisions, starting in the 1970s, opened the floodgates to unlimited political spending, Americans have watched money speak louder than their votes. American Promise is a cross-partisan organization working to pass the For Our Freedom Amendment, to restore the power of Congress and the states to set reasonable rules on election spending. With 25 states now signaling support, American Promise is building a national movement to put voters back at the center of our elections.
