Open Letter from Educators to Members of Congress

Created by American Promise

We are America’s educators. We are Republicans, Democrats, and everything in between. We work in every community throughout the country. We believe in the worth and dignity of each person, and we are committed to nurturing growth and excellence in all learners.

Like most Americans, we believe that the influence of money in politics is weakening our nation and hindering our ability to work together as a united people. The promise of America is that all people, regardless of wealth, have a voice in our government. Yet today the torrent of money in our electoral system determines whose voices get heard and whose policies prevail. When political power can be purchased like this, the very foundation of our system of representative self-government is threatened.

Fortunately, there is a solution. We are joining with other Americans across the nation to call for an amendment to the United States Constitution to end the domination of big money in politics. This amendment — the For Our Freedom Amendment — would allow Congress and the States to regulate money in campaigns and elections so that our elected officials can hear the voices of all Americans, not just those with the most wealth.

We therefore respectfully call on you, our Senators and Representatives in Congress who are charged with protecting our republic from corruption, to support the For Our Freedom Amendment by formally proposing it as an amendment to the United States Constitution.

This Is Our Moment

Did you know that $20 billion was spent on the last election?

We are the only democracy on the planet where this is considered normal. We have the power to turn the page — and restore some sanity to our country.

Can we count on you to help us protect our elections from out-of-control money?
