Maine State Pledge

I join the overwhelming majority of Maine to demand an amendment to the United States Constitution to end the domination of big money in politics and give voice to all Americans.
I will stand with Maine, without regard to party or other differences, and urge all candidates and elected officials to do the same, in order to pass and ratify such a constitutional amendment as soon as possible.

Maine & American Promise

In 2023, Maine voters approved a ballot measure to prohibit foreign government spending in State elections and reaffirm Maine’s support for the For Our Freedom Amendment. The ballot measure passed with 86% support, the largest margin of victory of any statewide ballot measure in Maine’s history.

Recently, four lawsuits were filed challenging Maine’s recently passed ban on foreign government spending in elections. The suits were filed by CMP, Versant, the Maine Associations of Broadcasters and the Maine Press Association in federal court. A fourth lawsuit was filed by a small group of voters and elected officials. Foreign government owned entities – including CMP and Versant – spent over $100 million in Maine elections over the last 3 years, and multinational media corporations are the biggest benefactors in the political spending arms race each cycle.

As an average American, it is nearly impossible to compete with billionaires, but what they can’t buy with money is the deep love and passion we feel for the outdoors and the freedom our Constitution guarantees.

We need to repair the Constitutional foundation for election spending reform so that all Americans may participate in self-government as equal citizens. I hope all Americans can come together with American Promise to help in this urgent, cross-partisan work.

Big money privileges those with the means to pour unlimited amounts of money into campaigns, which drowns out the voices of all Americans, especially those living in poverty and experiencing the harmful effects of institutional and social racism.
