Nov. 4, 2025 — On Election Day, following another cycle marked by escalating spending from billionaires, super PACs, and national groups, American Promise released the following statement:
“No matter where you stand politically or how today’s results unfold, nobody wants a system where money threatens to undermine voters. Americans overwhelmingly oppose unlimited spending in our elections.
“New York and New Jersey both have public-financing programs designed to amplify small donors, and even in those places, a handful of billionaires and elite interests have poured tens of millions into races, overwhelming voters with misinformation, nationalizing local elections, and inflaming partisan divisions.
“In New Jersey, outside spending groups account for more than half of all money in the governor’s race, a contest meant to reflect the voices of New Jersey voters.
“This unlimited spending isn’t the result of public debate or voter choice. It’s been imposed on us by unelected judges who have declared the federal courts the referee in money in politics.
“For the last 50 years, the Supreme Court has equated political spending with speech — overturning cross-partisan safeguards and upsetting the balance of power between states, Congress, and the courts that is essential to our constitutional system.
“Looking ahead to the 2026 elections, the influence of elite interests and outside money will only intensify unless we act now to restore balance. Authority over money in politics should rest with We the People and our elected representatives, where it resided for nearly 200 years of our nation’s history. Only a constitutional amendment can restore that balance and protect our freedoms and our right to representation.”
