Jeff Clements, CEO of American Promise, issued the following statement in response to the introduction of SJR 58 in Wisconsin:
“Wisconsin is the latest state seeking greater control over political spending to prevent out-of-state actors and foreign interests from interfering with its elections. The state Assembly and state Senate took bold steps in reclaiming Wisconsinites’ voices by introducing SJR 58 in the state Senate and a companion resolution AJR 57 in the Assembly. These resolutions call on Congress to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to restore the states’ power to determine whether and how to regulate election spending within their borders.
“SJR 58 reflects the desire of Wisconsinites to ‘foster robust political debate, protect freedom of speech, and strengthen self-government.’ With 78% of Wisconsinites supporting an amendment, Wisconsin joins legislatures in Oklahoma, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Wyoming, who have also considered resolutions this year, with Utah being the first to fully pass such a resolution in both of its legislative chambers in 2025.
“We thank Rep. David Steffen and Senate President Pro Tempore Patrick Testin for their leadership, standing up for Wisconsin voters, and addressing the erosion of state powers at the hands of unelected judges in D.C. We urge the Senate and Assembly to support these resolutions. If the resolution is adopted, Wisconsin will become the 24th state to urge Congress to propose an amendment.”
