The Sutherland Institute released a new report saying that court decisions have made it harder for states to set their own rules about money in elections. The report calls for a constitutional amendment that would give states more power to decide how campaign finance is handled.
The report, “Freeing the States on Campaign Finance,” written by William C. Duncan, says that since the 1976 Supreme Court case Buckley v. Valeo, the U.S. Supreme Court has taken more control over campaign finance rules. As a result, states have less freedom to deal with issues like money coming in from out of state, foreign influence, and corporate spending in their elections.
