Jeff Clements, CEO of American Promise, issued the following statement in response to passage of SJ0008 in the Wyoming Senate:
“Wyoming senators today asserted that elections should reflect the will of their voters—not the will of dark money groups and foreign actors. For decades, unelected judges in Washington stripped power from states to determine whether and how to regulate election spending, leaving them vulnerable to outside and foreign interference. Foreign actors—many of whom don’t share America’s interests—abuse the system of money in politics by pouring millions of untraceable dollars through shell corporations and dark money groups.
“Joint Resolution SJ0008 calls on Congress to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that restores the states’ power to control their own elections, just like they were able to do for two hundred years. We thank Senator Ed Cooper for his leadership in championing this resolution, and to the bipartisan group of senators who want to put Wyoming’s interests first.
“House passage of this resolution would make Wyoming the 23rd state to support such an amendment. We urge House members to stand with their Senate colleagues—and the 74% of Wyoming voters who support the amendment—by passing this resolution and urging Congress to send back a constitutional amendment for state ratification.”
