Jeff Clements, CEO of American Promise, issued the following statement in response to the Senate passage of S.J.R. 7 in Utah:
“Today, the Utah Senate passed S.J.R. 7, a resolution calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that returns power to states to decide whether and how to regulate money in politics. The resolution reaffirms that Utah voters know what is in their state’s best interest, and control of elections should ultimately rest with them. Republican Senate Majority Leader Kirk Cullimore’s resolution reflects broad support from the Senate and nearly 80% of Utah voters.
“Election spending from out-of-state billionaires and foreign actors threatens the sovereignty of states to control their elections. Without the power to regulate political spending, states are vulnerable to outside actors who advance their own agendas while marginalizing the will of voters. The only way to stop this interference is through a constitutional amendment that restores the power of states to reasonably regulate political spending.
“We urge House members to stand with their Senate colleagues and the vast majority of Utah voters by passing S.J.R. 7. If adopted by both chambers, Utah will become the 23rd state to call for this essential reform, sending a powerful message to Congress that Americans demand and deserve control over their elections.”
