American Promise President Jeff Clements recently returned to Maine, where he attended Colby College and started his family for the launch of the Portland, Maine, American Promise Association.
American Promise President Jeff Clements recently helped kick off the launch of the Portland, Maine, American Promise Association. Clements attended Colby College and started his family in Maine, so this APA launch was especially meaningful to him.
“I first came here when I was 17 years old, went to Colby College and met my beloved Nancy, and we first started our family here in Portland,” Clements said. “I ran for local office here and learned to be a lawyer here.”
APAs enable Americans across the country to have a tangible impact on the movement for a 28th Amendment to get big money out of politics.
“Our system at American Promise is about creating local hubs of people, just like you,” Clements told the APA launch attendees at Stroudwater Distillery in Portland, Maine.
Clements believes citizen leaders have the opportunity to seize this moment in history to make lasting change that will empower all Americans, regardless of wealth.
“I think what American history teaches us over and over again is—and I think in our hearts, most Americans actually think this—is that we actually believe in our American promise of equal citizenship, of human liberty and our own responsibility,” Clements said. “And when asked to step up, Americans step up and do what’s right. And I think that’s what’s happening with the 28th Amendment campaign.”
