One Size Does Not Fit All: Leveraging Federalism For Freedom

In some circles, the concept of Federalism has been dismissed as an impediment to political progress in America. In this panel, we make the argument that distributing power throughout our system of governments plays a structural role in helping Americans “disagree better” by implementing different policies in response to local needs and preferences. At American Promise, we believe that federalism has several key features that enhance representative self-government, including the ability for different levels of government (national, state, local) to respond to different constituencies. This is a key concept and part of our 10-year plan to amend the Constitution to allow reasonable limits on political spending. Join us as we dive into the details and get Constitutional.

Voters First? Yes, but not without a Constitutional solution to the money problem. We’re all here because we want to restore the relationship with our elected representatives; remove structural barriers to more choice, voice, debate; and work on solutions for the country and constituents. But if you ask voters, the vast majority name one major barrier to making this happen: “It’s the money.”
The Constitution is our deep connection to legitimize consent of the governed, as the voice of the people. In times of division, rapid technological change, political violence, Americans have come together as a nation to pass amendments to the Constitution: there were 4 Constitutional amendments between 1961 and 1971, 4 more between 1913 and 1920, and one in 1901.
Some say a Constitutional solution is impossible, that the Constitution is unamendable. But Americans keep proving them wrong, amendment era after amendment era. Find out why the conditions in America are ripe right now for a new era of change.
the For Our Freedom Amendment – In the States and Across America

the For Our Freedom Amendment is the worst kept secret in America. Millions of American voters have signed petitions and voted for the proposed For Our Freedom Amendment in state and local initiatives; dozens of states have passed formal resolutions by ballot initiatives and legislative votes. Voters and local representatives in nearly 1,000 cities and towns have met in town meetings to debate and pass resolutions to condemn the influence of unlimited money in elections and to advance the amendment.
With overwhelming support from voters across all political parties, politicians are getting behind the For Our Freedom Amendment. A bipartisan group of state legislators describe how important it is to put partisanship aside, put voters first, and hold our congressional delegation accountable.

What if we could identify one thing you could support that flicks over the first domino allowing us to change and reclaim America; and that we have Republicans and Democrats with us; and that the overwhelming majority of people in the country are in support of it? Would you want to know what that one thing is?
the For Our Freedom Amendment is the way we will fight against the forces that seek to overwhelm us. It’s a common national effort, a great project to bring us together, to unite and empower Americans. And it’s … thrilling! Creating the conditions required for proposal and ratification of a Constitutional amendment means we have to be everywhere, working with everyone. This means being aggressively cross-partisan, laser-focused on bridging divides, experts at power-mapping, comfortable with strange bedfellows … and prepared for a tremendous effort that’s a whole lot of fun. This will be an experiential hands-on workshop where we share with each other the power of our voices.
