In 2020, Maine voters saw a $200 million Senate race and, as one voter described it, were “under an avalanche where no one could hear us.” A year later, energy companies owned by foreign governments spent millions to influence a state ballot initiative. And Maine is not unique: 2020 was the most expensive election season in U.S. history, underscoring the importance of transparency and the vulnerability of our system.
Join us for a conversation with Congressman Jared Golden (D-ME-02) and Maine State Senator Bennett (R-Oxford), service-minded leaders bringing a commitment to overcoming partisanship to solve this problem. Congressman Golden is a lead co-sponsor of the bipartisan Stop Foreign Funds in Elections Act introduced in Congress and Senator Bennett has joined independents and Democrats to lead a citizen ballot initiative, Protect Maine Elections, to stop foreign government money in Maine’s elections and accelerate the proposed Constitutional amendment (of which Rep. Golden is a co-sponsor) to enable Congress and the States to better regulate election and ballot spending.
