Jeff Clements, CEO of American Promise, issued the following statement in response to the passage of H.C.R. 1006 in the House of Representatives of Oklahoma:
“Today, Oklahoma leaders are taking a stand to control their elections and prevent interference from out-of-state billionaires, special interests, and foreign actors. H.C.R. 1006, which affirms Oklahoma’s sovereign right to decide whether and how to regulate election spending, was introduced with no objections, and then it was immediately adopted with unanimous support. The leadership of Majority Floor Leader Rep. Josh West and his colleagues mirrors the overwhelming support by voters in the state to amend the U.S. Constitution to give states the ability to enforce their own laws on election spending.
“H.C.R. 1006 reflects a desire that all states share to foster ‘robust political debate and self-government’ while ‘protecting free speech.’ The only way to protect these principles is through a constitutional amendment that restores the states’ authority to set commonsense safeguards on election spending.
“We thank Rep. Josh West for his leadership and the entire chamber for standing up for the interests of Oklahoma voters and taking action to keep state elections in the hands of the people. We hope the Oklahoma Senate will join with the unanimous backing of House members in support of this resolution.”
