American Promise celebrates the extraordinary life and legacy of U.S. Senator Alan Simpson (R-WY), who passed away March 14.
Senator Simpson was a true friend and outstanding public servant, exemplifying the American values of honesty, fairness, and accountability. He was an outspoken champion for regulating money in politics, working across the aisle to curtail the influence of mega-donors, overturn Citizens United, and restore sanity to our elections. A member of the American Promise Advisory Council, he was a staunch supporter of the For Our Freedom Amendment, working tirelessly to grow our movement in Wyoming and elsewhere. In 2018, we presented him with our Congressional Leadership Award for his many contributions.
Senator Simpson will be remembered, above all else, as a model citizen and statesman. He understood that the business of self-government is often messy and contentious — but he never allowed politics-as-usual to change him. He treated people with respect. He assumed good faith. He was unwaveringly honest, even when the truth was hard to hear. We’ll miss his moral clarity, humility and good humor. We send our sincere condolences to his family.
