During each election cycle, I frequently hear those around me say, “I don’t do politics.” Maybe this is a common phrase you’ve said yourself, or heard your friends say when discussing anything remotely political. Given the reality of our political system, one dominated by dark money and Super PACs, it’s understandable why many may feel this way. However, the uncomfortable truth is that whether you choose to engage with politics or not, it is constantly influencing your rights, opportunities, and everyday life.
Now more than ever, politics is driven by the wealthy elite, who use money to silence the voices of everyday people. If we want a democracy that truly represents everyone, not just the wealthy, we can no longer afford to sit this one out or disengage. Choosing to “not do politics” does not shield you from its consequences. From the cost of our education to the quality of the air you breathe, policies shaped by wealthy donors affect every aspect of our lives.
Ever struggled with high medical bills or limited insurance options? Behind the scenes, powerful pharmaceutical and insurance lobbyists shape policies that dictate healthcare costs, coverage, and accessibility. In the 2023-2024 election cycle alone, pharmaceutical and health products PACs contributed over $15 million to candidates. This ensures their interests take priority over affordable care for everyday Americans.
Frustrated by rising tuition costs and student loan debt? Policies on education funding, loan forgiveness, and financial aid are often shaped by those with financial influence, prioritizing lenders and institutions over students. In this past election cycle, education-related PACs contributed $72,150 to candidates, revealing how money in politics directly impacts the accessibility of higher education.
Feeling the strain of rising prices at the grocery store or gas pump? The cost of essentials like eggs and fuel are influenced by government policies and corporate lobbying. Powerful Super PACs spend thousands to shape laws and economic regulation policies, impacting the price you pay for everyday items.
When wealthy donors and super PACs fund our political campaigns, Americans bear the burden of higher costs. These issues are neither random nor inevitable. They arise from a political system where money holds more influence than the American people. Whether or not you actively engage you will continue to feel this impact. Despite this, It does not have to be this way, and we the everyday people hold the power to change the system.
At American Promise we believe that ending the dominance of money in politics is the key for restoring trust in democracy. The For Our Freedom Amendment is a constitutional amendment designed to empower Congress and the States to set reasonable limits on political spending. This amendment would give Americans a stronger platform within our democracy and curb the influence of Super PACs. Passing this amendment is about reclaiming democracy and ensuring that young people, working-class Americans, and underrepresented communities have an equal say in decisions that shape their life.
If you’re frustrated with the current state of politics, disengaging isn’t the answer. Reforming the system is. You can take meaningful steps today to drive the difference needed in American politics. Start by educating others about the impact of dark money in politics, support candidates who advocate for campaign finance reform, and sign the American Promise pledge to show your commitment to the For Our Freedom Amendment. Additionally, you can stay informed about upcoming American Promise events, collaborate on a public event with American Promise to amplify our mission, and take part in our 2025 national volunteer program to increase your engagement.
The choice is ours. We can either allow money to continue controlling our democracy or take action to create a system that works for all of us. Which future will we choose?
