Read this Q&A with Jerry Lloyd, a member of American Promise – Kansas City Region. Jerry and his APA have helped raise support for the 28th Amendment in both Kansas and Missouri.
Living on the border of Kansas and Missouri, Jerry Lloyd, a member of the Kansas City Region’s American Promise Association, is taking on the difficult task of creating strategies to advance the 28th Amendment in both states. To be successful, he has to understand the existing laws in each state and familiarize himself with the actions that have already been taken toward getting big money out of each states’ politics.
Recently, Jerry wrote a letter-to-the editor, which was published in the Kansas City Star, about the dominance of big money in Kansas and Missouri. In the letter, Jerry said American politicians have to pander to big money to get elected and remain in office.
“This new, self-selected donor class — not the people — now calls the shots,” Jerry wrote. “Too many of our representatives spend an inordinate amount of their time calling wealthy donors and raising money. And almost all Americans are locked out of this new big-money political system.”
Jerry also wrote that the 28th Amendment is the best solution to the big money problem in the United States.
“That is why I work to support the organization American Promise, which is spearheading its 50-state ‘Citizen Uprising’ with one goal: passing a 28th Amendment to the Constitution to get big money out of politics and ensure fair representation of the American people,” Jerry wrote.
In this Q&A, Jerry discusses why he supports the 28th Amendment and what he expects America will look like once the amendment is passed.
What issues do you want to solve by getting money out of politics with an amendment?
I want to fix the Supreme Court’s incorrect assertion that the Constitution of the United States of America provides protections to artificial entities established by the laws of any state, the United States, or any foreign state. I want to undo the judiciary’s incorrect interpretation that the spending of money to influence elections is speech under the First Amendment. I don’t want our federal, state, and local governments to be unable to regulate contributions and expenditures to influence our elections or policies.
What excites you most about the future of America, where we the people govern?
That all citizens, regardless of their economic status, will have access to the political process, and that no person will gain, as a result of their money, undue influence over our elections or policies.
Where do you live and what do you love most about it?
I live in Olathe, Kansas. Olathe has excellent city services, schools, parks and recreation facilities, and shopping and entertainment.
