American Promise statement in response to the introduction of HF 2225 and SF 2517 in Minnesota:
“By introducing HF 2225 and SF 2517, Minnesota lawmakers took a step to preserve free speech, self-government, and to regulate election interference from out-of-state billionaires, special interests, and foreign actors. These resolutions, which were introduced by a bipartisan group of House and Senate members, urge Congress to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow states to determine whether and how to regulate election spending. More than 70% of Minnesotans support such an amendment, and it is the only path to overturning Supreme Court decisions that have prevented states from ensuring that the will of their voters prevails on Election Day.
“These bills recognize the increasing threat posed by foreign actors and out-of-state billionaires and special interests, who abuse the campaign finance system to advance their narrow agendas and diminish the will of voters. Minnesota joins legislatures in Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming, which have all introduced similar resolutions to reclaim control over their elections and prevent unrestrained spending from outside interests.
“We thank Representatives Hollins and Engen and Senators Port and Bahr for their bipartisan leadership in advancing these critical resolutions. We urge all members of the Senate and the House to follow their lead and support HF 2225 and SF 2517, and join the 23 states that have already called on Congress to propose an amendment.”
